Get Involved

We encourage collective, enjoyable work days & thoughtful observation, rather than thoughtless labour

  • Help days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. 10am – 4pm with delicious shared lunches. Come & meet our great team of local people.
  • Several times a year we rally round to complete a big job (like tree planting or building the labyrinth). If you’d like to join one of these work weekends keep an eye on our social media where we’ll post dates, or just drop us a message! As always a shared lunch will be provided.
  • We welcome longer term helpers (Wwoofers) who we accommodate in our home in Bath.

Thanks to the help of many volunteers, the Land is becoming a thriving, beautiful and biodiverse space capable of producing many land based products and experiences. We welcome people who want to contribute to the land, to work, rest and play here, to share skills, learn and enjoy the beauty of the land and its stunning views.

Together we grow chemical free flowers, vegetables and fruit, and are working on making land grown products, including juices, wreathes, green wood and willow objects. We dream of developing product lines: pickles, jams, pesto, medicinal mushrooms, comfrey tea and beyond. We will sell locally and ethically, delivering by bicycle powered electric vehicles.

We have planted trees and native hedges, cleared a lot of mess and now have a flock of rare breed sheep who look after our pasture as we look after them.

We have neighbours in this valley where sound travels very well, so please be courteous at all times, especially when entering and leaving the site.

We are proud to work with:

We are grateful to many friends who go out of their way to help us with their effort, kindness and vision to enrich the land.

Work With Us

We have an exciting opportunity next Summer (2027) to come and work with us as we are looking for a seasonal gardener ….

Seasonal Community Gardener

32 paid days this year (Oct 26 to Oct 27) | Most work scheduled during summer

About From the Land

From the Land is a Community Interest Company based between the communities of Twerton and Englishcombe. We care for eight acres of land that include pasture for sheep, a willow meadow, an orchard, two polytunnels, and enclosed areas for flowers and vegetables (there are deer on the land!).

For the past two years, lottery funding has helped us grow our community programme. We offer practical training in skills such as working with wool and willow, foraging and wreath-making, alongside wellbeing days that invite local people to spend time in nature. Activities have included listening to the dawn chorus, making art and enjoying events such as our Mad Hatter’s tea party.

The role

We’re looking for a practical, welcoming gardener to help care for the land and support the people who volunteer here. You’ll organise and lead volunteers, work alongside them, and share your skills in a friendly, encouraging way.

This year’s grant funds 32 paid working days, most of them during the summer. The days may be taken on by one person or shared between several people, depending on the applicants and their availability. We’re happy to discuss a working pattern with the successful applicant or applicants.

What you’ll do

  • Organise and lead volunteers, explaining tasks and teaching practical skills as you work together.
  • Care for habitats across the site, including the willow meadow, orchard and growing areas.
  • Support food, fruit and flower growing in the polytunnels and enclosed plots.
  • Weed growing areas and gather grass for mulching.
  • Manage compost, including making, sifting and spreading it to improve the soil.
  • Explore practical improvements to composting facilities, such as building new compost bays.
  • Manage water on site and water plants as needed.
  • Maintain paths, the orchard and willow features, including the willow dome.
  • Help keep the land safe, cared for and inviting for volunteers and community activities.

About you

You enjoy practical outdoor work and working with people. You can organise tasks, explain things clearly and help volunteers of different ages and experience feel included. Experience in gardening, food growing, habitat management or leading volunteers would be useful. Curiosity, a willingness to learn and an interest in sharing practical skills are also important.

How to apply

Please send a short note telling us about your gardening or land-based experience, any experience working with volunteers, and why you’re interested in the role. You’re welcome to apply even if you don’t have experience in every area listed.

Please include your availability over the summer and whether you’re interested in taking on all or part of the 32 paid days. Send your application Su Hart su@baka.co.uk (subject Seasonal Gardener contact Su Hart 0780 490 4048
